Thanks to Bullen Healthcare the Dorothy Mandelstam award was re launched at the ACA 2009 conference. The award is a significant opportunity for members to be recognised for their skill and committment to continence care. Read more here.

The winners of this prestigious award are :

Jackie Rees, a continence clinical nurse specialist and Fania Pagnamenta a tissue viability clinical nurse  specialist from Newcastle.

The winning paper presented a case study of a patient with a stroke who experienced incontinence dermatitis and how the use of an all silicone skin barrier preparation promoted skin healing.  The paper demonstrates how collaborative working between the two specialities helped to develop a clear treatment approach that encompassed both continence and tissue viability needs. Congratulations to both Jackie and Fania.

Bowel Special Interest Group (BSIG) Award

This years papers were of a high standard making judging a difficult decision. Doreen McClurg won the BIG award kindly sponsored by Norgine pharmaceuticals, congratulations to Doreen.  The winning paper described a pilot study into the feasibility of abdominal massage for the alleviation of constipation symptoms amongst people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Constipation has a significant impact on those with MS affecting their sense of well being and adding to their symptom load.  If proven abdominal massage could reduce the symptoms of constipation thereby providing a cheap effective way of enhancing the lives of people who have MS. The ACA look forward to hearing the results of Doreen’s research at a future ACA conference. Here is Doreen receiving the award from Graham Roberts,- National Field Sales Manager for Norgine:

Award for best free paper abstract and best  presentation of a free paper at conference

The award kindly sponsored by Astra Tech is for a best oral presentation and the best abstract of a free paper. This year both awards were awarded to Marian de Vito a primary care continence co-ordinator from Kingston Primary Care Trust. Marian’s abstract on developing a community continence assessment pathway was clear and logically presented. The paper discussed the development of the pathway within the context of existing research and identified that a continence pathway may not apply to all patients. A continence pathway cannot replace for example, the professional judgement that is required around continence problems at the end of life.  Many congratulations from the ACA to Marian.
